REVIEW: Safe Haven

REVIEW: Safe Haven

Guys - just remember what I always  say about chick flicks.  If you take her to one, especially a sappy romancer, it’s you  will get lucky in the end.

Unlike the other Nicholas Sparks movies, this one is a mystery, thanks to director Lasse Hallstrom’s tweaks. Besides directing another Sparks romancer “Dear John”, Hallstrom’s impressive credits include “Chocolat”, “The Cider House Rules” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”. So yeah, this is the guy who discovered Leonardo DiCaprio.

What works, thanks to Hallstrom, is a quietly played out romance , at real life pace.   This is Julianne Hough’s first dramatic role and she plays it low-key. Josh Duhamel is her equally emo-damaged love-to-be.  Their scenes together feel authentic because Hallstrom had his leads improve.

It’s hard to decide which is  more beautiful: our impossibly gorgeous stars or the picturesque town of Southport, North CarolinaSparks is as in love with the Carolinas as he is with romance!!

While the love story feels real, the climax is right out of a harlequin novel. Safe Haven is pretty much a safe film.
