Troy police chased and quickly closed in on an armed suspect in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
Here is audio of the police pursuit:
You’ll hear Officer Danielle Ashe chasing Donald Lewis III, 36, of Cohoes. The call came in after a fight between two men and then Lewis took off from 87 Fourth Street, police said. This chase went through several blocks and alleys until officers cornered Lewis.
“Listening to the expert dispatch of information and the relentless pursuit by our officers gave me a tremendous sense of pride” said Troy Police Commissioner Anthony Magnetto in a statement. “This is one of the best examples of police dispatch and response I have seen in years.”
The call came in around 2:45 p.m. that one person was bloody and had what appeared to be a serious head injury, police said. Ashe gave chase, calmly and clearly calling out her locations and direction of travel while other officers converged on the area, continued the pursuit several blocks through alleys and streets.
After running through the church yard at State and Third Streets, two bystanders in the area of The Bethany Center on State Street (between 3rd and 4th) blocked the suspect’s path and physically tried to stop him, police said. Lewis drew a fully-loaded .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun and the bystanders got out of the way while officers disarmed him by ordering him to drop the gun, police said.
Lewis is charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon (3rd degree) and Obstructing Governmental Administration (2nd degree). He was arraigned Thursday morning in Troy Police Court.
